Rocca Sorrentina- 18th century fictional Italy

Rocca Sorrentina is a project of Brown University, featuring a representation of a fictitious but historically-plausible 18th century island community, located in the Bay of Naples, off the coast of the Sorrento region in southern Italy.   We are seeking to interpret and better understand various aspects of the Enlightenment and the era of the "Grand Tour" as they were manifested in Italy in the latter part of the 1700's.

There are three general areas of interest in the two regions:

1. THE OOC ENTRY PLATFORM AND EXHIBIT HALLS (Rocca Sorrentina)
The Entry Platform contains
    •  An Orientation area with free 18th century clothing
    •  the Showcase Gallery, which mounts regular shows of paintings, photographs and other artistic creations by residents and other Second Life artists.
    *  Two exhibit halls which contain informative displays and museum-quality exhibits highlighting important aspects of 18th century history, literature, culture, and ideas.

2. ISLAND-LEVEL AREAS (Rocca Sorrentina)
** Take the teleport from the Entry Platform to the "Town & Harbor" **
The buildings on the island reflect the complex society and the diverse architecture of southern Italy in the late 1700's.

PLEASE BE COURTEOUS AND DON'T ENTER ANY BUILDING WITH A SIGN BY THE FRONT DOOR THAT SAYS, "RESIDENZA PRIVATA" (UNLESS YOU HAVE PERMISSION OF THE RESIDENT).  THEY ARE PRIVATE HOMES

Among the public facilities at island level are

*  The Harbor area and docks

* The Villa Vesuviana (first floor) - a grand house residence inspired by Andrea Palladio's famous Villa Capra La Rotondaヴィラ・アルメリコ・カプラ and its surrounding gardens.  The main level of the building is public, but the rooms on the second level are private.

*  The Accademia di Sorrentina (first floor) serves as a library of 18th century publications and a space for educational activities.
*  Cabinet of Curiosities (upper floor) is a "museum" displaying examples of 18th c. scientific achievement and collections of cultural artifacts of interest in the 18th century.

* La Fortezza, a late Renaissance Spanish fortification that has been upgraded  to accommodate modern artillery of the 1780s

* The Church of Saint Valentine (patron saint of beekeepers, among other things)

* The Shrine of Santa Maria Stella Maris (and if you look closely you will see it is an ancient Roman structure converted for use as a Christian shrine)

* the TAVERNA (best place from which to watch the sunsets)  -- once a Byzantine chapel

* the Coffee House  - a place to share ideas and information, as well as caffeinated beverages

* the Anfiteatro, inspired by the Bosco Parassio in Rome, where concerts, plays and poetry readings are presented.

* the saltwater bathing beach, where ladies and gentlemen can find complimentary bathing attire and bathing wagons, so that they can engage in the newest modern health activity of saltwater bathing.

* shops depicting 18th c. trades and wares, some of which sell era-appropriate items

*  Visitors may sail the waters of the Bay of Naples and Provence (to our north) by using the boat rezzer on Fisherman's Beach.

3. CAMPANIA-LEVEL AREA (Rocca Sorrentina)
** Take the teleport from the Entry Platform to the "Campania" **

The Campania is the scenic, fertile part of the southern Italian mainland which surrounds Naples.  Our virtual Campania is on a platform at 1400m altitude and extends over both the Rocca Sorrentina and the Bay of Naples regions.

*  Use a free horse available at Vista Point or walk on foot to enjoy the magnificent scenery, a large working fattoria (farm), smaller country homes, a small tavern, and a rural capella.

*  There are several direct teleport points between the Campania and the island itself.  You'll see signs with the teleport destinations over doors around the island - just walk into the door without clicking, give permission, and tp.

ACTIVITIES AND ROLEPLAY

Everyone is welcome to visit, explore, shop, and roleplay if you wish.  We have a variety of events and educational activities many of which -- such as gaming parties, salons, plays, and social events -- are "in character" (IC) in the year 1790, while others such as book discussions and lectures are "out of character" (OOC).

Strictly speaking, this is not a roleplay sim, although there is roleplay activity here which you are welcome to participate in if you are so inclined.  If you do wish to take part, we only ask that you wear a human avatar and appropriate 18th century clothing (there are complimentary outfits available near the teleport station), and that you adhere to our roleplay guidelines which may be obtained in the entry area.

Historical and roleplay activities here are set in the context of the year 1790.   The island is a district within the Kingdom of Naples, but has a high degree of autonomy.  It is administered by a council of local magistrates in the absence of a rarely-seen Royal Governor.  As Rocca Sorrentina's economy is largely based on trade and tourism, people of any nationality are welcome to visit, provided they are civil to one another.

If you wish to receive information about IC and OOC activities, please feel free to join the open enrollment group, "Amici di Sorrentina."  There is a group joiner in the Entry area foyer.

If you are interested in renting a home, apartment, or merchant space, please contact Sere Timeless, Candace Ducatillon or Aldo Stern.

The public facilities on the island are available by prior arrangement for educational and cultural activities.  Educators interested in using Rocca Sorrentina as an immersive learning environment should contact Aldo Stern or Serenek Timeless
