Renaissance Island

by Baroness Anne de Darcy (Amza Hydraconis)

When Renaissance Island was created back in the beginning of the year 2007, no one had any idea how long it would last.  Now in our 11th year, Renaissance Island has gone through quite a few changes as SL grew and improved.  Created by librarians, Renaissance Island is akin to a classroom sim open to scholars of the Renaissance and/or Tudor period.

Most recent changes made were to make it more authentic in how a small English village looked. (Although, an explanation is needed as to why the Globe Theatre is in a small English village.)

There are currently 3 exhibits:  printing, weaving and a bakery.  More exhibits are being planned as of this writing.

The below SLURL will drop you in front of the Boar's Head Inn where storytelling and music occurs.  Please feel free to explore the region at your leisure.

Welcome to renaissance island.  please be comfortable as we begin the tour.

** Ground level - Da Vinci Copter "Thou Shalt" ride**

Thou shalt see a way of life that has not been seen for ages. The daily life of a societal era which began in 1450 to the early 1600's. Tis the era of music, art, science, literature, and a sense of enlightenment.

Here in Merchant's Row, our shoppes have such goods for your wants and needs. Thou shalt find clothing, a master builder, furnishings and other sundries. The market place was not only to acquire food and goods, but to meet friends and neighbors to reacquaint themselves of their daily lives.

The Renaissance Island shoppe on thine right has free apparel, one each for a lass and lad.

Yonder theatre first opened in 1576 on land leased for 21 years in shoreditch.  Then it was called the theatre. There was a dispute with the landowner concerning the building itself, so on 28 december 1598, whilst the landowner, Giles Allen, was away for christmas, a carpenter, peter street, players and friends, dismantled the theatre entirely, moving it to a warehouse near bridewell.

When favorable weather allowed, the materials were ferried across the thames in southwark, and reconstructed as the Globe by the shakespeare company, the lord chamberlains men.  It was opened in the autumn of 1599.

As our journey continues, thou shalt see houses for residents.  if thou so desirest, there are several for rent. If interested thou mayst contact Amza Hydraconis for information. It was also common for residents to have a shoppe in the front room whilst the kitchen was in back and living sleeping quarters were on the upper level.

As we go, please take notice of signs with parchment affixed to them.  touch these for more information than can be recited here.

We now approach the village commons.  people also meet here to exchange news.

Thou shalt find the town hall where ye may ask for help with an alderman; the physician's house, with herb hut and garden behind it, the tailor's, which offers a free cloak to ward off a winter chill, and our parish church of saint minutia's.

St. minutia has a wonderful history, more so than can be said here.  when able, please return to the church to read the parchment.

Here is our practice arena for jousting and fencing.  contests are held for his majesty's pleasure during his brief visits (Tiltyard).

Warming up, hop in, leaving soon...

The blacksmith(鍛冶屋)and stables(馬小屋).  if thy mount is ever in need of shoes, our blacksmith would be happy to oblige thee. At the stables thou couldst rent a stall for your mount or buy a horse.

The bulwark became necessary along our waterways for defense against invaders. Our newly rebuilt bulwark is well armed with such artillery to send invaders back from whence they came.

This house once belonged to our parish musician, Thom Dowd, a very accomplished recordist. He gave concerts in lagswell hall as well as in other venues. Sadly, master Dowd was lost to us by an illness and his house is now a museum in his honor (Thom Dowd Museum).

We have a new parish musician, Wald Schridde, who performs in the Boar's Head Inn the fourth friday of the month.

The manor thou seest is known as Lagswell Hall. Balls and concerts are held here, where the well-to-do in their finery attend for their enjoyment. His majesty, on occasion, stays in Lagswell Hall during his brief visits.

Ah, we come unto a favorite place, the wishing well. If thou so desirest, thou may drop a coin or two and make a wish.

The large building next to yon small cottage is the parish schoolhouse.
Our Grand tour ends at the Boar's Head Inn, where storytelling, good mead and friendly conversation take place.
The wharf beyond the inn is our major area of commerce, importing and exporting goods.
